INTRODUCTION
The
W. Evans George deeds, documents and papers were deposited in the National Library
of Wales by W. Evans George, Solicitors, Newcastle Emlyn, in two separate groups
(see Annual Reports 1966, p. 53, and 1969, p. 49) which have now been combined
to form a single archive, mainly concerning the Brigstocke family of Llechdynny
and Blaenpant.
The Brigstockes
became resident in p. Kidwelly, co. Carm., when John Brigstocke, son of Robert
Brigstocke of Croydon, married Mary, dau. of Morris ab Owen of Llechdynny, p.
Kidwelly, c. 1624. He had two sons, Owen, who was high sheriff of co. Carm.
in 1657 and 1669, and William, who was mayor of Carmarthen in 1669, 1698, and
1705. Owen was married three times, and as a result acquired several properties.
His only son William married Winifred, heiress of Robert Birt of Llwyndyrys.
They had two sons, Owen Brigstocke (dec. 1746) of Llechdynny, barrister at law,
MP for the Cardiganshire boroughs, 1712-13, and Cardigan county, 1718-22, and
William Brigstocke (dec. 1725) who married Elizabeth Jenkins of Blaenpant, p.
Llandygwydd. Owen died without issue, while William’s heir was William Brigstocke
(dec. 1751) of Blaenpant, who married Mary dau. of Francis Lloyd of Glyn, p.
Llangendeirn. Their son Owen Brigstocke (dec. 1778) was also the heir of Owen
Brigstocke (dec. 1746). However, after the death of William Brigstocke in 1751,
his widow Mary married Dr John Jennings, who claimed part of the Brigstock estates,
and Owen Brigstocke had to have legal recourse in order to reclaim the paternal
estates. Owen Brigstocke was succeeded by his son William Owen Brigstocke (dec.
1831), a colonel in the Card. Militia and high sheriff of co. Card. in 1794,
who inherited the Gellydywyll Estate from a cousin in addition to the Llechdynny
and Blaenpant Estates. His eldest son William Owen Brigstocke married twice,
but had no issue. Llechdynny therefore became the property of his brother the
Rev. John Brigstocke and descended to Augustus Henry Brigstocke who left it
to his sister Mrs I. Fagan in 1909. Meanwhile Blaenpant became the property
of William Owen Brigstocke son of the Rev. Augustus Brigstocke of Gellydywyll.
W. O. Brigstocke was a barrister-at-law and chairman of Carm. County Council,
1888-92. His eldest son Augustus Brigstocke became bankrupt at Oxford during
his minority and had to be helped by his father. Augustus was agent to his step-mother
Mrs Maria Brigstocke, 1869-99. The Brigstocke archive ends in 1912 with his
papers and those of his sister Miss Catherine Maria Brigstocke.
The archive is divided into two main groups, the first comprising deeds and documents
and a few related papers, and the second consisting of papers only. The first
group is divided into five sub-sections containing ( i) deeds, etc., of properties
before their acquisition by the Brigstockes; ( ii) deeds, etc., of properties
after their acquisition by the Brigstockes, ( iii) miscellaneous deeds, etc.,
relating to the Brigstockes; (iv) miscellaneous deeds which have no apparent connection
with the Brigstockes ; (v) draft deeds of W. Evans George and Sons relating to
properties in the lower Teifi valley. The second main group is divided into four
sub-sections containing (i) papers of the Brigstocke family: (ii) legal papers
in a dispute between Owen Brigstocke and John Jennings, (iii) papers of the Lewes
family of Gellydywyll; (iv) papers of W. Evans George.
